Details

What’s Unique about the Rongai Route?

  • The Only Route from the North: Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, offering a different perspective on the mountain. This route is drier and more remote compared to others.
  • Less Crowded: The Rongai Route tends to be less busy than the more popular southern routes, offering a quieter experience with fewer trekkers.
  • Wildlife Sightings: As one of the more remote routes, Rongai offers chances to spot wildlife, such as elephants, monkeys, and a variety of bird species, especially in the lower forested areas.
  • Gradual Ascent with a Steep Final Night: The Rongai Route allows for a steady climb, which is excellent for acclimatization, but the final push to the summit is challenging, requiring a steep ascent during the summit night.
Perfect for those seeking a more peaceful and less crowded trek with the opportunity for wildlife sightings, the Rongai Route offers a unique experience while still providing a challenging climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Our adventure begins at the Rongai Gate, where we complete the necessary park registration. From there, we embark on a steady hike through the forested slopes of Kilimanjaro, offering an opportunity to spot local wildlife, such as monkeys and birds. The day’s trek ends at Simba Camp, where we will camp under the stars.
We continue our journey through the beautiful, less-traveled route toward Kikelewa Camp. The path gradually ascends, offering panoramic views of the mountain’s dry northern slopes. As we climb, the landscape changes, and trekkers will feel a sense of remoteness, perfect for those seeking a quiet, peaceful journey.
The trek today takes us closer to the rugged Mawenzi Peak. As we ascend, the terrain becomes more alpine, and we are treated to dramatic views of the Mawenzi cliffs. Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located at the base of Mawenzi Peak, provides stunning views and a high-altitude environment for acclimatization.
Today, we continue our ascent to Kibo Hut, situated on the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is rocky and barren, giving trekkers a true sense of the alpine desert. Kibo Hut marks the final stop before the summit, and the evening is spent preparing for the final push to Uhuru Peak.
The summit day begins with a midnight start, climbing through the night to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) before sunrise. The trek is steep and physically demanding, but the reward is a spectacular sunrise over the African plains from the highest point on the continent. After celebrating at the summit, we descend to Horombo Hut for the night.
On the final day, we descend to Marangu Gate, passing through lush rainforest once again. The descent is much quicker, and the change in vegetation is noticeable as we approach the lower elevations. At Marangu Gate, we complete the trek and are awarded certificates to commemorate our achievement.
An optional extra day can be spent at Mawenzi Tarn Camp for further acclimatization. This day helps climbers adjust to the high altitude and increases the chances of summit success. If added, this day provides a welcome rest while enjoying the stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding landscape.
