The Machame Route is perfect for those seeking a challenging and scenic trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as “The Whiskey Route,” it offers diverse landscapes, exciting views, and a more demanding experience than the Marangu route. What’s Unique about the Machame Route?

  • Scenic Beauty: Known for its breathtaking views, the route traverses several ecological zones, from lush rainforest to high-altitude desert.
  • Acclimatization Focus: The “climb high, sleep low” approach ensures better acclimatization, giving trekkers a higher chance of summiting successfully.

The adventure begins as we enter the Kilimanjaro National Park at Machame Gate. After completing the necessary registration, we embark on a scenic hike through the lush rainforest. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest as we gradually ascend toward Machame Camp. Overnight stay here, preparing for the days ahead.
Today, the trek continues as we leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zones. The path becomes steeper, but the reward is the stunning panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s slopes. As we climb toward Shira Camp, enjoy expansive views and the unique high-altitude vegetation.
This is one of the most scenic and challenging days. The route ascends to Lava Tower (4,630m), providing a perfect opportunity for acclimatization. After a break at Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Camp, where we will spend the night. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps with acclimatization, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
After a hearty breakfast, we tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep and exhilarating section of the trek. It’s a short but rewarding climb with breathtaking views of the mountain and surrounding valleys. Afterward, the path leads through the moorland to Karanga Camp, nestled between rocky outcrops.
Today’s trek takes us through alpine desert terrain as we ascend to Barafu Camp. This is the final camp before the summit, and it offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. The evening is spent preparing for the summit push, with an early rest before the midnight start for the summit.
The summit day has arrived! We begin the hike at midnight, ascending through the night in preparation for sunrise at the summit. The route to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is challenging, but the moment you reach the summit and witness the first rays of sunlight over the Tanzanian landscape is unforgettable. After celebrating at the summit, we descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
The final day of the trek is a descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. We trek through the rainforest again, enjoying the lush surroundings as we head toward the gate for completion of the trek. A celebratory certificate is awarded, marking the successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro!
